Italian cuisine enters UNESCO heritage.
Italian cuisine has officially been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. A historic recognition, as for the first time it is not a single recipe or product being celebrated, but Italian cuisine as a whole-understood as an expression of cultural identity, sustainability, and biocultural diversity.
Unlike other gastronomic heritages already inscribed, such as the French gastronomic meal, Japanese Washoku, or traditional Mexican cuisine, the Italian nomination does not focus on specific techniques or preparations. At its core lies the social value of food: cooking and eating as acts of care, sharing, and connection.
Italian cuisine is thus recognized as a living, popular, and widespread heritage, deeply rooted in local territories and seasonal rhythms, capable of combining culture, sustainability, and inclusion.
This recognition follows a path already established with the inscription of the art of the Neapolitan pizzaiuolo (2017) and the Mediterranean Diet (2010) on the Intangible Heritage list, and it has a direct impact on tourism. Food is already one of the main reasons for traveling to Italy and Europe; it now also becomes a certified cultural asset.
