Italian tourism in 2021.
Tourism was one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic. Prior to Covid-19 it contributed over 230 billion euros, represented 13% of GDP, and accounted for 4 million employees (15% of the Italian workforce), the elimination of hospitality activities during the lockdown has reduce volume by 18.5% for the year. An article published on SmartWeek addresses this. 65% of hotels and restaurants face closure, approximately 1 million jobs could be lost, with the sector overall contracting by 44%. Price Waterhouse Cooper dedicated the third Digital Event of the “Italy 2021 – Skills to restart the future” platform to the tourism sector, which saw the participation of the most important voices in the sector. There are ten priorities for sector operators:
- Increase the resilience of business models
- Dedicate appropriate incentives to the sector
- Focus on digitization for an increasingly personalized travel experience
- Expanding and upgrading the tourist offer
- Work on infrastructure and transport
- Investing in digital upskilling and in professional training
- Overcoming the fragmentation of the sector
- Accelerate the definition of a sustainable offer
- Focus on Italian brand communication
- Take advantage of digital technologies
