Sustainable tourism in Italy? More can be done!

Sustainable tourism in Italy is now a consolidated reality, but it can still be improved. This is confirmed by a survey commissioned by Omnio and carried out by YouGov which asked Italians to evaluate themselves in terms of sustainability. From what has emerged, Italians are sufficiently aware of environmental issues, but one in five thinks they can do more.

On the one hand, the data show us a widespread interest in sustainability (only 2% of respondents declared themselves not interested), on the other 63% of respondents consider their daily behavior respectful of the environment, but can be improved. If 17% are satisfied with their approach, 15% feel they are still not doing enough. In terms of age, the most critical group is generation Z: 21% between 18 and 24 years old do not think they have a behavior that is sufficiently respectful of the environment.

As far as sustainable tourism is concerned, it emerges that the main obstacles are represented by cost, travel arrangements and duration. In fact, 41% of respondents would like to have cheaper sustainable travel alternatives available, while for 19% bus and train tickets are too expensive to prefer them to ship or plane. With respect to travel arrangements, the biggest problem can be summarized in the lack of information on the sustainable options available. Another determining factor when it comes to sustainable travel choices concerns speed: 32% of respondents believe that buses and trains are too slow, while 37% believe that these vehicles are less flexible than a car. .

Regarding housing: 23% of respondents prefer sustainable solutions. Attention is also paid to waste: 37% think the amount of packaging waste produced on site is important and 48% believe that using recycled products is essential. Finally, a new trend is beginning to assert itself also for food choices: according to 10% of the interviewees, consuming vegetarian or vegan foods is considered decisive for a more sustainable lifestyle.
