Sustainable tourism: Siena leads the way in Italy

Siena is the first Italian city of art to obtain the certification of sustainable city by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, born from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Tuscany, the historical centre of which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, is an example for the rest of Italy. His commitment to sustainable tourism has been documented in a dossier that highlights several good practices, among which emerge: the protection of works of art and architectural heritage; the enhancement of food and wine and local crafts; the conservation of the green valleys around the historic center; the climate neutrality of the Province of Siena, certified in 2011; the commitment of the Alliance for Carbon Neutrality for energy efficiency and reduction of emissions.

In addition to Siena, Italy Valsugana, Val d’Elga, Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Tarvisio and the two villages of San Vigilio and San Martín have been certified.
