The most popular Italian destinations for travelers
In February 2021, over 5.6 million users searched for flights to reach Italy, 641.9 thousand more than in January. It is mainly Italians who contributed to the growth (36%), together with Spanish (14%), Germans (10%) and the British (10%).
Lombardy and Lazio, thanks to the large flow of capital, generated the largest portion of searches among regions and together represent 39% of searches. During the last few weeks, travel interest has increased especially regarding the southern regions and islands: searches for flights to Sicily, for example, have strongly increased in the last 30 days, going from 660.7 thousand to 944.4 thousand, with a percentage change of 42.9%. Strong increases in searches for Sardinia, which went from 271.9 thousand to 378.5 thousand (+ 39.2%). Followed by Calabria (+ 16.8%), Puglia (+ 15.6%), Campania (+ 2.6%).
Planning for trips is currently still hampered by numerous factors and the climate of confidence towards the summer months is low. It is mainly foreigners who are looking towards the long term: considering the month of July, for example, foreigners are 73% of interested travelers, while Italians are 27%.
