Artificial intelligence in healthcare, why it isn’t taking off?

Thanks to artificial intelligence, healthcare will become more effective and efficient in the future, improving the daily lives of millions of people, however adoption of this technology is slower than in other sectors.

This is also confirmed by Stanford University in a study entitled “Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence”: Healthcare is one of the sectors in which the impact of artificial intelligence will be most significant, being increasingly used in biomedical applications, particularly in diagnosis, in the discovery of new drugs and in life sciences.

There are however, many cultural, technical and regulatory barriers – firstly the enforcement of privacy and personal data protection legislation – that hinder its use. There is still a long way to go, starting with the clarification and simplification of the rules, funding research and allowing greater competition among operators in the sector.

In this sense, an intervention by the legislature and a campaign by the government in the most technologically advanced countries may help to change the mindset and help doctors, health workers and patients perceive AI as reliable, and something that can go hand in hand with continue human contributions, in order to improve the effectiveness and safety of care.
