How business travel is changing

The business travel industry has been hard hit by the pandemic, with revenues shrinking from 20 billion in 2019 to 7.6 billion in 2020 (Osservatori.net of Politecnico di Milano).
A sign of optimism comes from the Global Business Travel Association, the world’s largest business travel association, and its recent survey on the impact of the pandemic and how GBTA member buyers and procurement are coping with the return of travel. In general, there is growing “momentum” for a return to business travel and an increase in bookings, due in part to vaccination campaigns and passports.

Travel by train and for short trips is also resuming in Italy. The demand for hotels with sanitation and safety requirements is unavoidable and the trend is to avoid handling cash, with the preference being for electronic transactions.

The new trends linked to “Bleisure” (a cross between the terms business and leisure) and to “Workcations” (a cross between work and vacation to indicate remote work in a holiday resort) despite an increasing amount of space in the press and blogs do not yet seem to be a priority.
