Italian tourism finally on the upswing

Looking at the 2021 summer season drawing to a close, results have exceeded expectations.

Italians are driving demand, but there is also a return of foreigners. Between June and August, the Italian hospitality system registered the arrival of more than 33 million tourists for 140 million overnight stays, up 21% on 2020.

The data come from the sample survey carried out by the Centro Studi Turistici di Firenze for Assoturismo Confesercenti, made up of 2,085 Italian hospitality businesses. This is generally self-organized demand, choosing services through direct channels to suppliers. What remains, in fact, is the crisis of organized tourism (from travel agencies to tour operators) that have not enjoyed the recovery.

Companies in the sector are now aiming to extend the season into September. Based on the indications received, the expected variation for September is estimated to be +10%. The most optimistic indications come from companies in art cities (+14%) and lake resorts (+12.6%).
