Milan launches its citizenship science project.

A sample of 40,000 citizens was chosen to participate in the health survey of the city. The data collected will be used to create targeted prevention campaigns and the findings will be published in an open data format. The project is called “Ciao Milano, tell me how you are!” It was funded by Fondazione Cariplo, coordinated by ATS (Health Protection Agency) of the Metropolitan City of Milan, in collaboration with the University of Milan-Bicocca, the State University, the Polytechnic and the City.

A representative sample of 40,000 people in the Lombard capital will be sent a questionnaire by mail. The acquired information will allow to proceed with a mapping of risk factors and health conditions of the city: not only habits and lifestyles but also the conditions and perception of the individual neighborhood in order to plan more timely public policies. Some examples: if you notice in a neighborhood the presence of many sedentary individuals or people with obesity, you can develop a widespread network of bike paths; if you discover a high percentage of smokers you can organize an awareness campaign; if there is a low consumption of fruit and vegetables, the presence of city markets can be increased.

At the end of the pilot project, the information collected will be available in open data form to allow anyone to study it.
