International Nurses Day.

May 12 marked International Nurses Day, symbolically coinciding with the anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

For the occasion, the National Federation of Nursing Regulatory Authorities (Fnopi) adopted the slogan “The talent of nurses. Art and Science in evolution’, emphasizing the importance of combining art and science in the work of nurses.

From 12 May to 14 May, the Provincial Orders of the cities of Bergamo and Brescia, designated capitals of Culture 2023, in collaboration with the Fnopi, organized a series of events dedicated to the nursing profession with many moments of sharing and reflection.

According to the Civic Report presented by Cittadinanzattiva together with Fnopi and the National Federation of Orders of Medical Radiology Technicians, Technical Health Professions, Rehabilitation and Prevention, While citizens recognise nurses as a reference point for their health needs, the 460000 nurses in Italy are among the lowest in Europe, and working conditions are inadequate in several respects: about 60% of nurses say, for example, that they still do not have access to psychological support, especially after the extremely difficult experience experienced during the pandemic.

In general, nurses require the clinical, professional and cultural development of the profession: the report shows that almost 80% of nurses have a post-secondary education. These are specialized professionals who need to train with a greater number of academic paths to enhance their clinical skills, to the benefit of patients.
