Riparte il turismo italiano

Italian tourism is starting again.

For at least two decades, the recovery of tourism in Italy has been mainly driven by foreign tourists. The increase in foreign presences during the summer months since 2003 has been 54% (100 million between June and August), which largely offset the decrease in national presences, which fell by 7%. The increase in global tourist flows expected in the next decade could translate into a potential increase of about 30 million tourist arrivals in Italy, also due to major events that will resonate, such as the 2025 Jubilee and the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.

This is what emerges from the report of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti on the Italian tourism sector that also highlights the challenges that Italian tourism will face in the next decade:

The Asian presence increases: the growth of the middle class in Asia will be one of the main engines of tourist flows worldwide, with travelers eager to live unique experiences, often luxury.

Operators will have to offer eco-friendly and customized services using new technologies to compete in sustainable tourism and digitalization.
Less popular destinations: less traditional destinations will become more popular and climate change will have a bigger impact on choices.

Finally, the report provides indications on the strategies that the Italian tourism sector will have to adopt to remain competitive and maximize its attractiveness for foreign visitors:

Industrialise the sector: tourism operators will have to consider a greater use of external funding and flexible management models to reduce the fragmentation of supply and encourage the creation of large national operators.

Targeted training programs, specialized schools, and continual refresher courses for professionals in the sector can be used to reduce the gap between job supply and demand.

Enhancing secondary destinations and non-seasonal tourism: through the promotion of lesser-known resorts and attractive tourist modes throughout the year, such as cycling, mountain tourism outside the ski season, thermal and gastronomic tourism.
